Manncorp Installs Selective Soldering and Fluxing Systems at Calsonic Kansei Mexicana

Electronic automotive component manufacture Calsonic Kansei Mexicana S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Japan's Calsonic Kansei Corporation, recently purchased two ULTIMA STR2 selective soldering machines and an ULTIMA SSP selective fluxer. The new equipment reduces process time 30-50% compared to the system it replaced, primarily due to the fact that separate machines allow simultaneous fluxing and soldering with a single fluxing unit serving two selective systems. Quality is also dramatically improved: On the company's first day of production with the ULTIMA systems, 300 PCBs were produced with zero defects or quality issues of any kind.
A unique aspect of the ULTIMA STR2, is a high-precision, programmable PCB holder that moves boards in the X, Y, and Z axes over a stationary solder pot and wave nozzle, allowing for a highly stable wave as small as 2.5 mm in diameter. The systems were also purchased with automatic solder feed mechanisms that eliminate the need for an operator to monitor and maintain the solder pot level.
The new equipment was installed by SMT equipment provider Manncorp and included full training on both operation and maintenance. Under the direction of Manncorp service technicians over the next two days, Calsonic process engineers programmed a sceond application and seamlessly took over full production; again defect-free.
Calsonic Kansei Mexicana, whose main customer is Nissan Mexico, manufactures fully customizable instrument clusters and HV AC controls for the automotive industry. Their plants in Taiwan and Japan also use the ULTIMA systems extensively.

TR2 selective soldering 35-lb-capacity solder pot handles lead-free or conventional Sn/Pb solders while an integral nitrogen hood with micro pre-heater inerts the solder site and stabilizes the wave temperature. Point-to-point and drag soldering functions, along with solder pump speed, wave height control, dip height and dwell parameter settings, are fully programmable to ensure perfect, highly repeatable solder joint quality. A high-precision, three-axis drive mechanism moves the PCB rather than the solder pot, providing a positional accuracy of ±0.01 mm.
Operators are able to monitor live video of the soldering process on their laptop or PC via the included bottom-side "witness" camera.
The TR2 selective soldering works in conjunction with the ULTIMA SP benchtop selective fluxing system. Separating the fluxing and soldering functions between the two machines provides faster throughput and more reliable, higher quality results. The SP selective fluxing applies flux precisely where it is needed using high-precision, low-pressure air-flux atomization nozzles. A single SP fluxer can support up to three TR2 selective soldering systems.
