Manncorp Installs Selective Soldering and Fluxing Systems at Calsonic Kansei Mexicana

From Manncorp

Electronic automotive component manufacture Calsonic Kansei Mexicana S.A. de C.V., a subsidiary of Japan's Calsonic Kansei Corporation, recently purchased two ULTIMA STR2 selective soldering machines and an ULTIMA SSP selective fluxer. The new equipment reduces process time 30-50% compared to the system it replaced, primarily due to the fact that separate machines allow simultaneous fluxing and soldering with a single fluxing unit serving two selective systems. Quality is also dramatically improved: On the company's first day of production with the ULTIMA systems, 300 PCBs were produced with zero defects or quality issues of any kind.

ULTIMA STR2-L Selective Soldering Machine

A unique aspect of the ULTIMA STR2, is a high-precision, programmable PCB holder that moves boards in the X, Y, and Z axes over a stationary solder pot and wave nozzle, allowing for a highly stable wave as small as 2.5 mm in diameter. The systems were also purchased with automatic solder feed mechanisms that eliminate the need for an operator to monitor and maintain the solder pot level.

The new equipment was installed by SMT equipment provider Manncorp and included full training on both operation and maintenance. Under the direction of Manncorp service technicians over the next two days, Calsonic process engineers programmed a sceond application and seamlessly took over full production; again defect-free.

Calsonic Kansei Mexicana, whose main customer is Nissan Mexico, manufactures fully customizable instrument clusters and HV AC controls for the automotive industry. Their plants in Taiwan and Japan also use the ULTIMA systems extensively.

The high costs of lead-free solder wire and manual labor have caused increasing numbers of SMT assemblers to take a closer look at automatic selective soldering as a more efficient, economical, and reliable solution for attaching connectors and other through-hole components to surface mount boards.

Manncorp, the electronic assembly equipment supplier that has provided detailed specifications, pricing, and online purchasing capability on its website for over a decade, has just posted a video of the new ULTIMA TR2 bench-top selective soldering machine on its website. At just $39,995, the ULTIMA TR2 allows surface mount assemblers, who may have considered selective soldering equipment cost prohibitive, to improve quality and throughput with a quick return on investment.

A unique aspect of the ULTIMA TR2, which can be seen in the video, is a high precision, programmable PCB holder that moves boards as large as 330 x 250 mm (13" x 10") in the X, Y, and Z axes over a stationary solder pot and wave nozzle. In addition to maintaining a highly stable wave as small as 2.5 mm in diameter, this design also allows for the most compact, light-weight, and easily-maintained system on the market.
The video highlights other key features of the ULTIMA TR2, with special emphasis on its highly responsive solder pump and programmable flow control. By regulating both the PCB travel speed and the volume of solder flowing from the nozzle at various stages of the soldering process, perfect, bridgeless solder joint quality is assured. The video demonstrates this effect by showing a through-hole connector with parallel rows of pins being soldered in a single pass. Close-up views show excellent filleting and solder penetration.
